Bigger, better Great Southern food festival

Media Statement from Hon Kim Hames MB BS JP MLA & Hon Brendon Grylls MLA
  •     Funding to increase events and attract food and wine celebrities
  •     Funded by Royalties for Regions through Eventscorp’s Regional Events Program
Food lovers from around Australia and the world will have a bigger, better IGA Taste Great Southern food and wine festival to look forward to thanks to a funding increase from the State Government.
Tourism Minister Kim Hames said IGA Taste Great Southern received the funding boost through Eventscorp’s Royalties for Regions - Regional Events Program to increase the number of attractions, host international journalists to build the profile of WA’s Great Southern region and produce, and attract celebrity chefs and personalities.
“The funding will be used to increase the program of events to more than 40 and include a beach barbecue at Denmark; a lunch celebrating the region’s multicultural diversity; and a fine food and whisky-matching, long table dinner with Iron Chef Australia winner Herb Faust in Albany,” Dr Hames said
“To raise the profile of the festival, organisers have also signed former 2009 MasterChef Australia contestants Poh Ling Yeow and Justine Schofield, who both have their own TV shows.”
Dr Hames said the Great Southern region would also benefit from increased marketing to bring more visitors to the six-week long festival.
“In addition, international wine writers will attend the festival to increase media exposure of the region in some of WA’s key tourism markets such as China,” he said.
Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls said this was one of many regional events that would be held this year to recognise local expertise and promote the Great Southern region.
“IGA Taste Great Southern will demonstrate some of the world’s greatest skills amidst Western Australia’s unbeatable stunning attractions,” Mr Grylls said.
“It is important we, as a community, support these events and acknowledge the local talent and ingenuity that exists in our own backyard.  Through the State Government’s Royalties for Regions initiative, these events demonstrate the opportunities and lifestyle options of our regional communities.”
