Emergency department and outpatient facilities opened
Media Statement from Hon Roger Cook BA GradDipBus MBA MLA
- New emergency department and outpatient facilities opened at Katanning Health Service
- Part of the biggest capital works program ever completed by the WA Country Health Service
Agricultural Region MLC Darren West represented Health Minister Roger Cook today to officially open the main build component of the Katanning Health Service, which is undergoing a major redevelopment.
The redevelopment is part of a $300 million capital works program that is improving healthcare infrastructure in 37 towns across the Wheatbelt, Great Southern, Mid-West and South-West regions.
In the Great Southern, in addition to Katanning Health Service, Gnowangerup Health Service, Kojonup Health Service and Tambellup Health Clinic have already been upgraded.
Today's opening at Katanning Health Service celebrated the completion of the new main entrance, emergency department, medical imaging and outpatient facilities.
Builders Cockram Constructions took possession of the building site in July 2016 and final completion of the project is expected in mid-2018. In the final stages of the redevelopment, surgical services and sterilising departments will be refurbished, a new laundry and morgue will be built, and staff car parking will be finished.
Improvements to infrastructure at Katanning Health Service have been complemented by an investment in digital and information systems. The introduction of a full coverage wireless network has supported the new nurse call and mobile duress systems to improve both patient and staff safety.
Staff will now be able to use an increased range of mobile technology, as Wi-Fi is available throughout the hospital also complementing the health service's telephone capacity. The wireless networks will support the future use of mobile telehealth carts that will use innovation and advanced technology to bring medical specialists, based elsewhere, to the patient's bedside.
The health service has also received a revamped communication room with upgraded switching infrastructure and uninterrupted power supplies into brand new purpose-built ICT facility rooms that connect to emergency generators, meaning staff have more reliable and stable ICT systems that have the capacity to support new technology as it becomes available.
Comments attributed to Health Minister Roger Cook:
"The new facilities are part of a $32 million refurbishment taking place at the Katanning Health Service, and are part of the McGowan Government's investment in regional healthcare across the State.
"In smaller towns and districts like Katanning, emergency and hospital services are being modernised with upgraded facilities and telehealth services to provide access to top emergency specialists when required."
Comments attributed to Agricultural Region MLC Darren West:
"The new emergency department, medical imaging and outpatient facilities provide a modern, patient focused health care experience.
"This is one of many small hospital redevelopments and refurbishments in regional Western Australia currently underway."
