Woodanilling was named after a spring in the Boyerine Creek one kilometre south of the townsite. This spring, situated among the casuarinas and flood gums, used to flow into a beautiful pool which became the gathering place for the districts new settlers. It became known as Round Pool.

The Woodanilling district was first explored by Europeans in 1830/31, when Captain Thomas Bannister led the first overland expedition from Perth to King George III Sound. Further exploration was undertaken by surveyor General John Septimus Roe in 1835 and Henry Landor and Henry Maxwell Lefroy while looking for a large inland sea, which supposedly existed between southeast of York. The lake they found, with the help of Aboriginal guides, is approximately 40 kilometres northeast of Woodanilling and was called Dumbleyung by the Aborigines. This site is nowadays known as Dumbleyung.

Woodanilling's Church, the Woody Tavern and Richardson's Store are main landmarks in the town and there are a number of sporting and community groups, which provide the town with activities and functions throughout the year. The primary school is located in Carlton Street, while a school bus travels daily to Katanning where students attend from year 5 onwards.  Woodanilling Primary School caters for Years Kinder to 4.
