SAFETY EQUIPMENT
The Transport Marine Safety Division lays down the amounts and standards of safety equipment to be carried in private boats: amounts which vary with how far offshore you go. Please understand these are minimum standards. Smart skippers add on extra gear to suit the trip.
MINIMUM SAFETY EQUIPMENT FOR PROTECTED WATERS. (Wilson, Parry, Irwin, Nornalup and Walpole Inlets)
BILGE PUMP OR BAILER OR BUCKET.
Boats of 7 metres and over must have a bilge pump. Boats under 7 metres may have a pump or a bucket or a bailer. A bilge pump may be of any type -manual, engine driven or electric. It must be capable of removing at least 4000 litres of water an hour. An electric or automatic pump must have an indicator to show when it is working. Boats with full length sealed, self-draining decks are not required to carry pumps.
FIRE EXTINGUISHER
Boats with inboard motors or liquid or gas fuelled appliances, must carry an extinguisher. Boats with outboard motors and no such appliances do not have to carry extinguishers. Any Australian Standards-approved extinguisher other than a water-filled type is acceptable.
MINIMUM SAFETY EQUIPMENT FOR OCEAN WATERS UP TO 5 NAUTICAL MILES OFFSHORE
As for protected water plus:
· A life jacket for each person on board. You may choose from any of these life jacket standards: SOLAS, COASTAL or Australian Standards AS1512. They must be of a suitable size for the people on board; an adult-sized jacket works very poorly on a child.
· An effective anchor and line.
· 2 hand held red flares or 2 parachute distress rockets. All flares and smoke signals must meet either Australian Standard AS 2092, or Australian Uniform Shipping Laws Code specifications.
· 2 hand held orange smoke signals or 1 smoke canister.
MINIMUM SAFETY EQUIPMENT FROM 5 NAUTICAL MILES OFFSHORE.
As for 0 to 5 nautical miles plus:
- 2 parachute distress flares. You do not need to carry hand held red flares as well as parachute distress flares.
- A 2-way marine band radio.
You must carry an EPIRB if you are travelling more than 2 miles from mainland foreshore.
Your Radio Routine (27MHz band) Anytime you leave the launching ramp or your mooring, switch on your marine radio, tune to channel 88, then call
Victor Mike Romeo 6 13 and give your own call sign.
The Operator will ask you to change to a working frequency (channel 90).
Then give your Departure Point, Destination, the number of People on Board, amount of fuel and your E.T.A. or E. T.R. (estimated time of arrival or return). Leave your radio on and tuned to channel 88 for the duration of your trip. (power drain on " receive" is negligible)
IF YOUR DESTINATION OR E.T.A. CHANGE, INFORM THE OPERATOR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. THIS WILL AVOID A FALSE ALARM OR UNNECESSARY SEARCH.
On your arrival/return, call Victor Mike Romeo 613 and inform the base operator who will then sign you off.
THANK YOU
