The following article appeared in the Albany Mail on Saturday February 16, 1889.
The Great Southern Railway
This railway, running from Albany to Beverley and thence by Government line to Perth, is rapidly approaching completion. All the earthworks, some 242 miles in length, are completed and the rails are laid for 215 miles. The Railway, which passes through some of the most choice lands in the Southern Districts, will be opened early in 1889, and intending settlers, land speculators and others can now negotiate with the Company for the purchase of lands. Several suitable townsites will be declared. Two parties of surveyors and explorers have been engaged in carefully examining the country. Purchasers therefore will have the full benefit of the information gained by the Company’s prospecting.
The quality of the land in many instances is very excellent; consisting of red and chocolate coloured soil capable of producing almost every variety of crops. The rainfall is certain. Droughts are practically unknown. By judicious conservation water can be stored. Springs generally appear when the land is cleared.
A fine jetty runs into Princess Royal Harbour, whereat two of the largest Ocean going Steamers can be berthed. With a splendid Harbour, fine climate and certain rainfall, men with experience and possessed of capital should succeed on the Company’s lands. The sales of Crown Land are suspended within the Company’s Zone until October 1891. Plans and other details will be published when the surveys are completed. Further particulars may be obtained on application at the Company’s office.
