Where is Pingrup? Pingrup is located:
What is Pingrup like? Pingrup is a small agricultural based country town renowned for being a friendly, crime free and family oriented tourist destination. Renowned as a family-oriented tourist site, Pingrup boasts colourful attractions including its annual race day complete with two-up competition, the history-filled Community Federation Shed adorned with a giant replica shearer's handpiece, and the nearby stunning pink salt lakes. Named after the nearby Lake Pingrup, the townsite is best known for its wheat and sheep industry. A little bit of history In 1923 the railway line was extended easterly from Nyabing to Pingrup and the district surveyor had land surveyed for a townsite at the railway terminus. When the name of the railway station was being decided the railways department thought Pingrup was too similar to Tingerup and suggested "Geina", a name which had been used for the area around 1900. This name was not acceptable to local settlers who proposed Lake Pingrup as an alternative. However, the Lands Department decided that Pingrup was a more desirable name, and not that similar to Tingerup. The townsite of Pingrup was gazetted in 1924. Pingrup is an Aboriginal name first shown on maps of the area around 1873. The meaning of the name is not known. Pingrup links |
