What is Narrikup like?
Narrikup is a small, active community situated in the Plantagenet Shire.  Traditional sheep and cattle farming is giving way to wildflower propagation and diversification into niche markets such as alpacas, ostriches and cherries, with rapid development of vineyards, plantation forestry and tourism.
Limited services include a post office, general store and cafe, a wildflower retail outlet, a community hall, a children's playground, park and picnic areas and sports facilities. See our Narrikup Fast Facts for full details.
Many more services are available at nearby Mt Barker and Albany.
Narrikup is close to popular tourist attractions such as the Porongurups, the southern coastline and forests. Accommodation is available in several high quality farm-stay establishments

A little bit of history

Narrikup is derived from the Noongar language, possibly from ‘narrik’ meaning abundance or plenty - perhaps ‘place of abundance’.
The first recorded non-indigenous activity in the area occurred on 3 December 1829, when Surgeon Thomas Braidwood Wilson, RN camped for the night on the banks of a stream some miles westward of the present townsite of Narrikup.  The doctor and his party had set out from the military encampment on King George Sound.
Three properties were established in the district during the 1860-70s, but the first real influx of population occurred when the Great Southern Railway opened in 1889. The railway siding was named Hay River.
A reserve for a townsite was set aside in 1891, and in 1905 the regional surveyor for the area reported that several settlers in the area were interested in acquiring land at the siding. 20 lots were surveyed, and when a townsite was gazetted two years later in 1907 it was named Narrikup, after a nearby brook.

The first business was established in 1919 when Mr Sam Jolly began operating in a galvanized iron shed near the siding.  As the district grew so did the business and in 1922 he transferred to a larger and more pretentious building on the Hay River Road, which is still in operation today.
