What is Kojonup like?

The population of Kojonup is approximately 2,200. Major activities which support the town are mixed farming, with emphasis on sheep, grain and cattle; and service and manufacturing industries.

Kojonup is a rural town which still displays the trademarks of a traditional country settlement. It has a wide range of heritage-related attractions, including the Kodja Place museum.
Kojonup has all major facilities including a large supermarket, bank, ATM, newsagent, service stations, hotels and caravan park.

A little bit of history

For many thousands of years before the arrival of European settlers, Noongar Aboriginal people were the traditional custodians of the land that is now referred to as Kojonup.

The town is named after kodj, a Noongar name for a stone axe.

Alfred Hillman discovered Kojonup Spring in 1837. Following the arrival of settlers that year, Kojonup became a military outpost and an important staging place on the road to Albany. Over the next century, Kojonup evolved into a contemporary farming community.
