2010 Australian Consumer Fraud Taskforce Survey

The Australian Consumer Fraud Taskforce would like to hear from you. The Taskforce would like to know about any scams that you have received and how you have responded to them. Gathering this information will help to improve the prevention, detection, investigation, and prosecution of scam offenders. To assist in collecting this information, the Australian Institute of Criminology, a taskforce member, is conducting a short online survey.

To participate please click here http://www.aic.gov.au/crime_types/economic/fraud/acft/survey.aspx.

The SCAM email is identified by five key indicators:

1. The "buyer" is always in a remote location, overseas or offshore
2. The "buyer" has no phone access only internet access.
3. The "buyer" can only make payment through PayPal.
4. The "buyer" is offering more money for the vehicle than what's been advertised without ever having viewed the vehicle.
5.The "buyer" is purchasing the vehicle for someone else

Here is an example of the offending email.

Hello,
Thanks for getting back to me and am sorry for the late reply, I must let you know that am very happy its still available for sale, I must let you know that i will buy it from you. so i am making the final confirmation on the sale, Now an overdraft (excess) international check will be issue out to you in your name for the item and all i will want you to do is to deduct your money as soon as you receive the payment, which is $100 for both. and resend the rest to the person coming for the pickup at your location through western union money transfer, because am from the united kingdom and i have arrange the pickup with him so please understand this because the same person will bring some other items from Australia for me.

So please get back to me with the followings so that the payment can be send to you immediately.

Your full name...?
Your full contact address.......?
Your city...?
Your postal code...?
Your telephone number so that the payment can be send to you.
