What is Bremer Bay like?

The 250 permanent residents mainly make their living through fishing, farming and tourism. During peak holiday periods around Christmas and Easter the population is swelled by hundreds of tourists.

The town is a beautiful hidden away sanctuary. The azure blue water and pristine white sandy beaches and undeveloped coastline attracts swimmers, surfers and fishers.

Most services are available, including a general store, service station, liquor store, hotel and post office. See our Bremer Bay Fast Facts for full details.

A little bit of history
The first European to make contact with the area was Matthew Flinders who, sailed the Investigator along the coast in 1802. By the 1820s whalers and sealers hunting in the Southern Ocean used the bay as a stopover point.
In 1841 the explorer Edward John Eyre and his Aboriginal companion Wylie passed through the area during their epic journey across the Nullarbor Plain.
In 1849 Bremer Bay was named by the WA Surveyor General John Septimus Roe after the captain of HMS Tamar, Sir Gordon Bremer. under whom he served between 1824 and 1827
The first European settler into the area was John Wellstead who arrived in the 1850s and built a two storey stone homestead which still stands near Tooleburrup Hill about 7 kilometres south of Bremer Bay.
The township came into existence with the establishment of telegraph station in 1876. The first operator was Mary Wellstead who was probably the first female telegraphist in the country.
The township of Bremer Bay was originally gazetted as Wellstead in 1951, but locals petitioned to have the town named to what it was known as locally - Bremer Bay. The name was officially changed in 1962.
