Whale Watching season begins in Albany!

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

There have been many whale sightings reported close to Albany over the past few weeks.  Some are seen from the shore and others out near the islands, tour operator, Albany Whale Tours can’t wait any longer, so their season is underway.

Update 6 June 2011
Beautiful and brutal!
For quite a while now, passengers have been wondering why the whales are reluctant to be still.  Only the big ones have remained calm and steady.  The juveniles and calves extremely flightly…quick to dive and flee.
Today, 2 kilometres south east of Bald Head, we found out why.
for an hour we watched Orcas in a ferocious display of nature at work.  totally disregarding our vessel, they carved their giant ’scimitar’ dorsal fins – harrassing a mother Humpback, a juvenile and calf.  Multiple breaches by the juvenile Humpback did not stop the attack.  One of the smaller Orcas would occasionally be caught and thrown into the air by the extraordinary strength of the desperate mother.  For an hour, water off Bald Head was threshed white with the black-bodied battles.
We had to leave, but the 25 passengers had some sophisticated camera equipemtn and we expect some startling photos to follow.  Watch this Space!!
Cheers, John
PS  Today we encountered between 5 and 7 Humpbacks, but most of the sightings were brief….no time for us.

Creating local sustainable and resilient communities beyond oil dependency

Creating local sustainable and resilient communities beyond oil dependent.

The Transition Town Initiative is simply a framework and process methodology that encourages and mobilises local residents to plan and implement strategies and activities that strengthen the resilience of their localities to withstand the shocks and challenges associated with peak oil and climate change.

It encourages communities to build upon important grassroots environmental and social capital building initiatives already in place, and create a coordinated range of projects leading to a collectively designed Energy Descent Action Plan. The Transition Initiative movement offers local communities an opportunity to create a positive, sustainable, resilient and socially connected future. (more…)
