Kojonup Working |
Kojonup Working operates within the Shire of Kojonup.
Kojonup Working’ s vision is to be part of an economically prosperous and socially vibrant community welcoming people to settle in Kojonup. A range of employment, enterprise and learning activities that reflect the community values will be nurtured.
Kojonup Working aims to increase employment, learning and enterprise in our community by working together to create our preferred future.
We will achieve our aim by:
-
Assisting local people with career development, learning activities and enterprise growth.
-
Monitoring trends impacting on rural and remote communities.
-
Planning sustainable local projects.
Values
Kojonup will be an economically prosperous and socially vibrant place welcoming people to settle in Kojonup. A range of employment, enterprise and learning activities that reflect the community values will be nurtured.
Kojonup Working activities and projects are community managed and undertaken by local community members. Projects are designed with a core mechanism that is not reliant on external control and has a realistic community volunteer component. Kojonup’s history as a strong community that gets on with the job will be nurtured. The volunteer hours and contributions of community members will continue and be recognised and celebrated.
Kojonup Working is managed by a working team with consensus decision making that enables members to identify opportunities and resources, develop actions and monitor progress.
This coordinated governance and management model is promoted to Working Communities.
Kojonup Working makes use of existing resources and services by forming collaborative partnerships and networks with rural communities, groups and organisations with similar values. Partnerships and networks have evolved that make communities more effective and efficient. Community groups working together are stronger, giving funding leverage.
Kojonup Working and the activities supported arise from needs in the community and are project driven not a response to funding. Community engagement followed by regular community consultation will occur to ensure projects meet community expectations. Ideas and stories are proposed before resourcing is considered.
Ongoing learning, skill development and creativity that includes a range of age groups and cultures will be included in each project area. Mentoring and small group activities that meet the needs of small rural communities will be encouraged.
Kojonup Working will ensure each project area has outcomes that take into account a quadruple bottom line – economic, social, creative and environmental.

Kojonup Working
In 1999 Kojonup received funding from the WA Department of Training to create local employment. Over the next two years a sustainable system was developed to assist workers, farmers and local businesses with employment. Kojonup Working assists with job creation, enterprise development, career counseling, job search and learning options. A working group oversees the project and monitors employment needs. The project is very successful and has strong support from community organisations, business, the Kojonup Shire Council and community members.
As support grew, Kojonup Working decided to start planning for the future. The Great Southern Area Consultative Committee and WA Department of Training funded a futurist to help the community with future scenario planning. The 2003 – 2005 Development Plan was a result of extensive community consultation, our community values, the pilot project history and our future vision. The plan included a core employment and training mechanism and 6 project areas with employment potential. At the end of 2003 The Rio Tinto WA Future Fund agreed to provide partnership funding over three years to implement the development plan outcomes that would lead to a sustainable mechanism.
During 2003 the core employment mechanism was established and governance and accounting procedures put in place. Work was started in the six project areas and the expected outcomes were achieved in most areas. In 2004 the project had outgrown the existing Telecentre arrangements and on May 10th become incorporated and moved to a temporary room off the Town Hall where a learning area was set up with donated computers to run tailored computer workshops.
During 2005 Kojonup Working received a grant from Lotterywest to establish a Community Learning Resource Area at the local CWA rooms. The core employment, learning and enterprise activities are now embedded in the community and, with the support of the Shire Council, Local Business and volunteers, can be sustained.

Community Learning Resource Area
The overall aim of our Community Learning Resource Area is to nurture a learning environment and create a progressive and innovative community exposed to new ideas.
Learning opens avenues to local employment and enterprise. The growth of flexible, external and online learning allows rural people to access learning opportunities that in the past were difficult to organise for small populations in rural areas. A learning Resource Area in rural towns is the ideal core mechanism to remove many of the barriers to learning that results from this spatial disadvantage.
As more and more rural people become exposed to learning options within the community, Kojonup Working is creating a venue and resources with dedicated volunteer mentors for existing learning opportunities, e-learning and external courses. In addition to this our Community Learning Resource Area is a venue with resources for professional, local and regional trainers to deliver small group workshops. Our voluntary Resource Officer will be trained to assist with administration and promotion in the Community Learning Resource Area for 3 hours/week.
The Community Learning Resource area is available for hire to trainers or groups for workshops or meetings. Feel free to call into Kojonup Working on a Wednesday afternoon to view the Learning Area or email kojonupworking@westnet.com.au
