Darkan
Darkan is the main town and administrative centre of the Shire of West Arthur. It is situated on the Coalfields Highway (Route 107), 204 kilometres from Perth off the Albany Highway, west of Arthur River. It is 60 kilometres from Collie to the west and Wagin to the east; 74 kilometres west of Narrogin and 115 kilometres east of Bunbury. It has a population of approximately 250.
Commercial services in the town include a supermarket, hairdresser, hotel, post office, roadhouse, three hardware and rural suppliers, two mechanic business, three engineering firms, Cooperative Bulk Handling receival bins and a café. Banking services to the community are limited to twice (6 hours) weekly.
Darkan has a District High School, which offers education from Kindergarten to Year 10.
The West Arthur Health and Resource Centre collocates a number of services including health, Telecentre, public library, Landcare Officer, community newspaper and visiting professionals such as accountants and Business Enterprise Centre staff. The centre is also used for a variety of community meetings.
Darkan was officially gazetted in 1906 and its early influx of settlers came with the opening of the Collie-Narrogin railway line. Situated in rich agricultural lands, the town has grown and prospered, despite the railway line no longer operating.
Community events will be organised in 2006 when Darkan celebrates its centenary year. |

Visitors to the town will find most businesses are based around the old Darkan railway station reserve between Coalfields Road and Burrowes Street. | |

HEALTH FACILITIES |
|
Medical services provided from the Health and Resource Centre.
Doctor. A doctor from the Earl Street Surgery visits the Health & Resource Centre on Wednesdays. Appointments can be made through the West Arthur Health & Resource Centre on (08) 9736 2000.
Nurse. A registered nurse from the Williams Medical Centre visits the Health and Resource Centre each Tuesday and Friday between 11.30 am & 1.30 pm. No appointment is necessary. For information ring the West Arthur Telecentre on 9736 2000.
Child Health and Immunisation Clinics. Child Health Clinics are held at the Health & Resource Centre - 2nd Thursday between 1.00 pm and 3.30 pm and 4th Thursday between 9.30 am and 3.30 pm. Ring the Williams Medical Centre on 9885 1006 for an appointment. Immunisation Clinics are held on the 4th Thursday of each month between 9.30 am and 10.30 am (no appointment necessary).
Home and Community Care operates within the shire.
St John's Ambulance. A voluntary ambulance is operated from Darkan. For all emergencies ring 000. |

- Bank. National Australia Bank, Burrowes Street. Operates part-time - Tuesday 10.00am-1.00 pm. Friday 1.00pm-4.00pm. EFTPOS is available at Harro's Supermarket and Darkan Roadhouse.
- General, Farming Supplies & Giftware. David Warren & Co (Landmark agent) and MJ Dew & Co (Elders agent) are both situated on Burrowes Street.

- Hotel. Darkan Hotel, Coalfields Highway. Fully licensed, offers accommodation, bar meals plus restaurant.
- Public Library. Operates from the Health & Resource Centre.
- Road House. Darkan Road House, Coalfields Highway. Sells fuel, hot food and snacks and offers café service.
- Supermarket. Harro's Supermarket opens 6 days a week 9.00 am - 5.00pm
- Telecentre. The West Arthur Telecentre, Burrowes Street is open Monday to Friday.
