Six Mile Cottage

Six Mile Cottage, which is on the Quindanning Road 10 kms north-west of Darkan, was built by Dick Strange in the early 1900s.

The cottage has two rooms and is contructed of timber slabs with a stone end wall and fireplace.  Visitors may enter the building to get an idea of how the early pioneer families lived.

Collie-Darkan Rail Trail

The Collie-Darkan Trail passes through bushland and picturesque farmland along the route of the disused Collie-Narrogin Railway which ran between 1906 and 1979, following the current Coalfields Highway (Route 107).   The flora and fauna is quite diverse.  Wildflowers are prolific in spring and wildlife abundent all year round.  It is suitable for horses, cyclists and hikers.

The Trail starts (or ends) in the west at Buckingham, 21 kms east of Collie, and ends (or starts) some 46.5 kms east in the town of Darkan.  Bowelling Station 18 kms east of Buckingham / 28.5 kms west of Darkan is the main stopover point.   Walkers are advised to carry sufficient food and water for two-three days trekking, and to arrange for pickup at either trailhead.

It is intended that the Rail Trail will link the towns of Collie and Darkan when it is complete.  At this time the 21km stretch between Collie and Buckingham is being used for mining operations.  When mining is completed, the area will be rehabilitiated and the original road and rail reserve reinstated.  The trail will then be continued to Collie
