The Bushcarers Group is a group of environmentally concerned residents of the Albany area who endeavour to raise awareness to stop the continuing degradation of our bushland. The group was formed in February 2000 to counteract the threats posed by environmental weeds such as Watsonia, Pampas Grass etc., and has been instrumental in preparing an Environmental Weeds Strategy for the City of Albany. This strategy has now been adopted by Council. Its key objectives are the environmentally sustainable use of the city's reserves, the raising of environmental awareness in the community and the control of environmental weeds within the boundaries of the City of Albany.
To learn more about the weeds threatening our bushland, click on the environmental weeds link above. If you want to help in the control of weeds you might want to consider joining one of the local community groups or participating in one of the regularly held Busy Bees at Mt Clarence or Lake Seppings.
Other major events include the annual Weedbuster Week held in October and the National Tree Day held in July each year. Details about these events will be published in the local paper and on local radio stations.
Perhaps you might even want to organise a group of weedbusters in your own area. If you are unsure how to tackle the weeds, contact our group for advice.
The group has recently received funding for the control of Blackberry and Gorse. Anyone interested in helping with the eradication of these weeds is urged to contact the City of Albany's Reserves Officer.
The City of Albany makes available resources such as weeding tools, a ute and trailer as well as a free weed tip pass for disposing the weeds at either of the City's waste disposal sites.
The City also employs two bushcare assistants who may be contacted for advice.
The Bushcarers act as an umbrella group for local community groups and will play an important role in the implementation and monitoring of the Environmental Weeds Strategy.
The Bushcarers meet on the fourth Wednesday of each month at 5:30 pm in the City of Albany council building at North Road. Anyone interested in attending our committee meetings is most welcome.
