The Honourable Senator Ian Campbell officially launches Gateway on the Internet today. Many Great Southern dignatories and representatives from throughout the region's business community and other groups attended. This is the most significant I.T. development the region has witnessed, as the "People's Portal" will bring the Great Southern on-line in a unique way. Read more here.

Liane Shavian, Great Southern author of "Surfing Antarctica" and numerous other pieces, is becoming a noted local writing personality, both locally and elsewhere. Alkoomi Wines of Frankland - is one of the largest Vineyards in the Great Southern of Western Australia.  Merv and Judy Lange and family have achieved tremendous success and multiple awards for their quality wines, they include Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling, Malbec, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Shiraz, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, the Mount Frankland Classic White and Red as well as many other varieties, and the latest addition, Blackbutt, which is only released in years of outstanding quality.  The first Alkoomi vines were planted in 1971, on rolling hills at an altitude of about 360m. These consisted mainly of Cabernet Sauvignon and Riesling but with some Shiraz and Malbec.
